How do I apply for Apostille in Australia?

If you have an original document issued by an Australian Government department (e.g. Australian birth certificate, marriage certificate, death certificate, citizenship certificate etc) and you will be sending the original overseas, then DFAT can Apostille the document without being first notarised by a Notary Public. DFAT issues Apostilles through the passport office in each Australia State and Territory capital city.

How Swift Notary can help

Swift Notary can have your document Apostilled by DFAT for you. To book online instantly, follow this link.

Documents that DFAT can Apostille

Original documents that DFAT can Apostille are:

  • AFP National Police Certificates
  • Australian University Degree available on My eQuals
  • Australian University Transcript available on My eQuals
  • ASIC Certificate of Registration of a Company
  • Birth Certificate
  • Certificate of Free Sale issued by the TGA
  • Certificate of Residency issued by the ATO
  • Change of Name Certificate
  • Citizenship Certificate
  • Court Document
  • Death Certificate
  • Divorce Order
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Notarised Document
  • Single Status or Record of No Result Certificate
  • NAATI Translated Document

What if the Original Australian Government Issued Document is Electronic?

If your original document is electronic, you must provide your document in its original electronic form for DFAT to issue the Apostille. In order for DFAT to verify the electronic document, you must forward the email sent by the issuing authority with the electronic document attached or linked in the email, or if the original electronic document is accessible through a web portal, you can provide the login details for the portal.

When is Notarisation required?

If you intend to only send a copy of a document issued by an Australian Government department (e.g. Passport, Australian Drivers Licence etc) overseas or a document not issued by an Australian Government department, then you must have the document notarised by a Notary Public before DFAT will issue you with an Apostille.
